Dr. Baker, GAA’s principal, is currently in his eighteenth year at Glendale Adventist Academy.
Originally from the Northwest, he was born and raised in the Seattle, WA area, graduating from Auburn Adventist Academy in 1977. He attended the University of Washington (Go Huskies!) but transferred to and graduated from Walla Walla College in 1981 with a B.A. in Theology and a minor in Biblical Languages. Immediately following graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Batiuk. and began serving as a chaplain at the Portland Adventist Medical Center while she completed nursing school. He then was asked to serve as a pastor at the Stone Tower Adventist Church in central Portland for a year and a half before being sent to the Adventist Theology Seminary at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan.
Graduating with a Masters of Divinity Degree from the Seminary in 1985, Dr. Baker and his wife moved to Glendale, California where he began pastoring the Bellflower Seventh-day Adventist Church and she began teaching Nursing for the Pacific Union College School of Nursing that was located at the Glendale Adventist Medical Center. He also continued his education by entering the MBA program at California State University, Los Angeles.
Dr. Baker entered the field of education as a Bible teacher at San Gabriel Academy where he taught for three years and also served as the administrative assistant and school registrar. Because he was now involved in the field of education, Dr. Baker began working towards both his denominational and state teaching credentials, eventually earning an Ed.S degree (Education Specialist) from Loma Linda University and an Ed.D. degree in Educational Administration from La Sierra University.
He came to Glendale Adventist Academy in 1989 as Vice-Principal of the high school division, bible teacher, and registrar, positions he filled for three years. He then became Elementary Principal, a position he held for nine years before being asked to serve as principal of both the elementary and high school divisions, a position he held for three years. However, an elementary principal position was added back into the school staffing, so for the past two years he has served primarily as principal of the secondary division, although technically, he is the over-arching principal for the entire K-12 campus.
Dr. Baker has two children. Daughter, Amanda, is a freshman at Pacific Union College in the Napa Valley and son, Andrew, is an eighth grade student in the elementary division of GAA. Wife, Ruth, is Executive Director of Mission Hospice in Pasadena, CA.
Dr. Baker loves watching and playing sports, especially basketball, football, golf, running, and hiking. As a hobby he collects early 19th Century Adventist memorabillia. He plays piano, clarinet, saxaphone and the radio.
